Who cares about aftercare for juveniles?
Half the young people who get out of Illinois youth prisons end up back inside. When Illinois broke off its youth prisons from adult ones three and a half years ago, it vowed to change that. The plan was to flood kids with support in their communities, to help them connect with school, with work, with treatment. Angelica spent time in the girls’ prison at Warrenville in northern Illinois. She …

Singled Out: A community conversation about the juvenile justice system
African-Americans make up 18 percent of Illinois’ youth population, but they represent over half of Illinois kids who are locked up. That discrepancy is called Disproportionate Minority Contact. Kids Yoga: A Solution to Global Obesity in Children

Two topics that most people are tired of hearing about are obesity and childhood obesity. The problem is we will not find solutions for these problems if we “bury our heads in the sand.” Kids Yoga is a viable solution to obesity in children, but this requires schools and parents to take action now.

Obesity has crept up on all age groups quickly; children in some countries need to change their lifestyles immediately. If not, there will be serious health repercussions that will shake our health systems and fragile economies.

How did massive numbers of obesity get here? How can less physical activity in children be acceptable? How could Kids Yoga be a solution?

Parents today have less buying power than our parents had. Many children are shifted from school to day care, while both parents are working extra hours to support the family. Many of today’s meals are composed of processed foods -whether they are store-bought, or bought for takeout, from a restaurant.

Physical education has suffered serious cutbacks since the “Cold War” ended. Back in the 1970′s, and before, children ran and played outside more often.

The Yoga lifestyle helps parents and children manage diet in a very busy and stressful world. If you are conscious of it, there are wiser food choices, even from restaurants. When children practice Yoga, they become much more aware of their diet, posture, activities, and daily exercise routine.

Educators, doctors, Yoga teachers, and parents cannot afford to wait until the next study on childhood obesity is completed to take action. Children are bigger than ever, due to inactivity and a high fat / carbohydrate diet. Large numbers of big children will become even bigger adults, who are at risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, various forms of cancer, and much more.

Therefore, educators, doctors, Yoga teachers, and parents must be proactive. Do not expect grant money, government assistance, or any help from “big brother.” Look at the reaction to global warming by the world’s governments and you see how long it takes to get a reaction.

For parents with school-aged children, there has never been a better time for them to attend Yoga classes. Children consider Yoga an extension of other games and exercises they would normally do. Children will naturally jump, roll on the ground, run, and spin around, in the course of playing with their friends.

With proper supervision from a certified Yoga teacher, children learn what they can and cannot do. Kids Yoga classes teach safe Hatha Yoga techniques for flexibility, strength and muscle tone.

If a child is obese, parents should not expect instant miracles with weight loss, and parents would do well to learn the practice of Hatha Yoga. In this way, parents and children will both be aware of proper dieting and a much healthier lifestyle.

Top 5 Kids Christmas Gifts

Now that the holidays going, here is a guide to point you in the right direction for Christmas gifts!

Razor Scooter: These scooters have been hot for the last few years. Kids love to ride them around the house, to their friend’s house, and a few like to play tricks on them. The sleek sliver scooter made by Razor is still the most popular model. Scooters are easier than a bike for children to pick up, since it requires less balance. Even toddlers can use them! Razor makes a Jr. sized scooter that has a second back wheel, giving the scooter enough stability for young ones. Radio Flyer also makes a scooter for tots, but with a second wheel in front rather than in back. The scooters are adjustable, so they actually grow with your child. These are also much cheaper than a bike! Scooters typically run from about -80, depending on model and size.

Dress up clothes: Dress up clothes are great for both boys and girls! Boys aren’t interested in the princess costumes like girls are, but they enjoy dressing up like firefighters, lions, and ninjas. Dress up clothes encourage imagination and creative play, and are one of those toys that don’t get “old.” Many home-school organizations use dress ups to teach about other cultures and for free play time. Girls love to wear princess costumes, and dance around. If you decide to get dress up clothes as a Christmas gift, don’t forget the accessories! Girls need feather boas for their princess costumes and boys need toy guns for their cowboy costumes!

Nintendo DS: The lite Nintendo DS is making big waves with children right now. With simple games for tots, Hannah Montana games for the girls, and racing games for the boys, the DS is a great toy for everyone. While this is a more expensive present, it is one that will last for a long time! Many parents feel that the Nintendo DS is a great investment, since it is a great travelling toy for kids to carry with them.

Legos: Legos don’t get old or expire. Plus, there are so many variations of Legos that you can always give a child an expansion to their Lego set. There are pirate ships, animals, airplanes, cars, castles, and the list goes on and on. Lego even created a “pink brick” set for girls, with Lego accessories designed just for girls! Jumbo and soft blocks are great for tots and babies, while the smaller, more detailed Legos give more creative options for older children.

Clothes: Here is a semi-responsible present to give children. It seems that kids shuffle through clothes so quickly, it’s difficult to find a time that they don’t need more clothes! Back to school clothes are starting to get a little more worn, the seasons have changed, and more often than not the kids have outgrown their Christmas dresses and dress clothes. Girls probably need a new Christmas dress for the season, and boys might need a new tie and slacks. New pajamas on Christmas Eve are a family tradition for my family; we all enjoy sleeping in new pajamas and waking up in them on Christmas morning. Regardless of what you purchase, clothes are one of those “necessities” that typically people like to receive!

Shelby Strong is an at home mom of 3 kids. She enjoys running an online store called My Cute Dressups where she sells Cinderella Dresses, and other princess costumes like Sleeping Beauty dresses, Snow White costumes, princess accessories, boy costumes and more.

Question by : How do you keep your kids well behaved in public?
I need some tips. Im still pregnant with my daughter but I was wondering how I would achieve this. I dont want to be the parent always yelling and/or pulling my child to the side and giving them threats. I am not planning on spanking my child, just time outs and taking privelages away. I’ve seen kids throwing tantrums and I just cant stand it.

Thanks for the help!

Best answer:

Answer by its just a joke
just be consistent in your home and when you tell him/her something in your home and don’t let them know what they did and why it was wrong. What your child acts like at home will be the same way they act in public.
